Sketch Comedy Classes in Philadelphia

PHIT has the most extensive sketch comedy writing training in the region. Our introductory sketch comedy writing classes give students the opportunity to break down sketches from current and classic shows, and learn how to develop comedic ideas by writing and workshopping their own original material. Graduates of our advanced classes learn how to prepare submission packets for writing gigs on stage and television.

Our sketch offerings consist of a core curriculum in sketch writing and a variety of special workshops and writers groups developed by our staff and instructors – people who have toured extensively around the country, had wildly successful viral videos on the internet, had their comedic writing appear in print, and written for television.

PHIT also offers workshops and master classes, drawing on our connections to the best writer/teachers in country – including Kevin McDonald from Kids in the Hall, Rich Talarico from Key and Peele, Kevin Allison from MTV’s The State, and former SNL writers Ali Farahnakian and Christine Nangle (among others). PHIT students and performers have gone on to write professionally as humorists, authors, website content contributors, and the even TV writers for shows like CBS’ Two and a Half Men, Nickelodeon’s Marvin Marvin, and Netflix’s DINOTRUX.

This is the place to start if you have never written sketch comedy before, or have dabbled in the past.  Over eight weeks, you and your classmates will watch and discuss a variety of sketches, learn about different sketch formats, and write and workshop your own material.  The focus in this course is on developing your individual voice and comic sensibility. The class concludes with a special opportunity to have established comedians perform a staged reading of your favorite sketch at a show featuring readings of other sketch students’ material as well.
