Improv Classes

ADULT IMPROV CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS
PHIT has taught improv to over 1,000 people since its inception in 2005 and we want to teach you next. Improv isn’t just for actors – the skills you learn in an improv class can be translated to all aspects of your life. Whether you’re dead set on being the next star of SNL or just want to get out of your shell, our classes will fit your needs.

Our teaching staff have decades of experience and all perform regularly at the theater, around Philadelphia, and across the country. But they’re also teachers, consultants, therapists, and actors who tailor class to the needs you have or what you desire to get out of your time at PHIT.

Our core improv curriculum has four levels and will keep you entertained for 8 weeks at a time. It’s a great place to start. If you’ve got more experience and less time, our workshops meet for one afternoon and study specific improv principles. PLUS, when you sign up for class you’ll also get passes to come see shows at the theater for free!

CORE CURRICULUM CLASSES
Improv 101 – “Intro to Improvised Scenework”: Students will learn the basic improv concept of “Yes, and..” and discover how a scene can be created through agreement. They will also learn important basic improv skills like: creating characters, establishing relationships, exploring scenes with objects and environment work. Students will then combine these skills to create fully improvised scenes with a partner.

Through a series of exercises focused on personal attention and challenges, discussion of what they do and do not enjoy seeing on stage among their classmates, and the director of their instructor, eight (8) students selected from the pool of applicants to this Improv Conservatory class will spend 8-weeks creating a unique style for a run of their own at PHIT. During four weeks of shows at The Shubin Theatre students will receive further feedback from their director, have the chance to watch tape of their performance to improve their stage skills and adjust their show as a group throughout a run.
