For students who develop a more intense interest in the craft of acting, our dramatic acting classes explore basic skills fundamental to performance including: action, objectives, tactics, and script analysis. Each course culminates in an exploration and showing of individual monologues or scenes with partners from class. interested in more than just making people laugh, PHIT is excited to offer dramatic acting classes.

Free Intro to Acting Workshop

This two hour introductory workshop gives students the chance to “try before you buy”, by sampling some of the things you’ll do in an 8 week acting course at PHIT. You’ll learn the basics of acting technique, explore a bit of character study, and dive into some cold scene work.

Acting 101:
An Introduction To Acting

In this class, students will explore basic acting skills fundamental to performance. Some concepts to be examined are action, objectives, tactics, and script analysis. This class will culminate in an exploration and showing of two contrasting monologues. Viewing of theatrical performances in Philadelphia followed by a discussion will also be a part of this class.

Acting 201

Building on the skills learned in Acting 101, Acting 201 puts more of a focus on the two person scene. Through a mix of exercise and workshopping, students will strengthen skills as well as learn new ways to approach scenes to create more believable characters.

Acting 301

Building on the skills learned in Acting 101 & Acting 201, Acting 301 focuses on acting in two particular styles. In this first iteration of Acting Styles, participants will explore comedy in the absurdist vein (i.e. Beckett, Ionesco, and Pinter) and Shakespeare. Throughout the session students will work on contrasting scenes and/or monologues from these styles, learning how to approach Shakespeare’s heightened language and a different type of comedy.
